Causes and Relief for Pregnancy Snoring

Pregnancy snoring can be an annoying issue in an otherwise exciting but at the same time tiring ordeal, and many women who do not normally have issues sleeping report that they have problems with snoring while pregnant. The term pregnancy snoring refers to the snoring issues which arise in around 20% of women during pregnancy, even those who have never snored before in their life.



The cause of pregnancy snoring can be traced to several different factors, most notably that women often have many more difficulties sleeping when pregnant, especially during the third trimester. A recent study from Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine has concluded that there is a definite link between snoring while pregnant and the development of gestational diabetes. 

The same study also showed a large increase in snoring while pregnant.

Gestational diabetes is a condition where the mother can develop a poor glucose (sugar) tolerance while pregnant, which can cause health problems for both the mother and baby if not properly managed. It is referred to as gestational diabetes because this glucose intolerance normally goes away shortly after giving birth. 

Nonetheless, many women with gestational diabetes also end up developing Type 2 Diabetes within five to ten years of giving birth. Another problem associated with gestational diabetes is that it can result in high blood pressure, which can further negatively affect sleeping patterns.

Still, even if you do develop gestational diabetes, the prognosis is quite good and most women are able to easily manage their blood sugar levels and give birth to completely healthy, normal babies. Nonetheless, this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be concerned about pregnancy snoring, and there are many different options available for anti-snoring devices which are safe to use when pregnant, and should reduce or eliminate the snoring. This will hopefully allow you to avoid the problems associated with snoring while pregnant.

Tips to Provide Relief from Pregnancy Snoring

Since snoring while pregnant can be closely related to lower quality sleep, it is important to do whatever you can to try to sleep better. One important thing to note is that pregnant women should not take sleeping pills under any circumstance, unless your doctor finds an all-natural supplement that is safe for pregnant women.
